Acquired Brain Injury Syndrome

Acquired brain injury (ABI) is a brain injury that is not congenital, degenerative, or hereditary. It is sometimes also referred to as TBI, or Traumatic Brain Injury. This syndrome may occur when external and sudden trauma physically damages the brain. The damage may be confined to one area (focal) or it may occur to other areas of the brain (diffuse). If someone close to you has acquired brain trauma due to someone else's negligence, contact a lawyer today.

Common causes of Acquired Brain Injury Syndrome include but are not limited to:

  • Toxic Exposure
  • Oxygen Deprivation
  • Certain Diseases
  • Certain Medical Treatments
  • Electric Shock
  • Head Trauma

While acquired head injuries are more common amongst children, adults experience them as well. In fact, this syndrome is one of the most common causes of death and disability for adults. ABI will usually affect one's memory, thinking skills, and muscle movements. More severe injuries may result in depression, psychosis, hostility, and restlessness. If your loved one is showing signs of this syndrome, it is imperative that they receive medical attention. Once medical treatment is received, contact a lawyer to discuss your options.

ABI syndrome can come in one of two forms:

  • A penetrating brain injury (also known as an open head injury) occurs when the skull is broken. An example of this would be a gunshot wound to the head.
  • A closed brain injury is the opposite of anything that would penetrate the brain yet still cause damage. For example, an ABI that results from a slip and fall is usually a closed brain injury.

Every 21 seconds, one person in the US sustains a Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) costs the country more than $48 billion a year, and between 2.5 and 6.5 million Americans alive today have had a TBI. Survivors of TBI are often left with significant cognitive, behavioral, and communicative disabilities, and some patients develop long-term medical complications, such as epilepsy.
