Texas Traumatic Brain Injury

A story from a Texas newspaper reports of a man that suffered from a severe brain injury in 1999 that can now speak again thanks to electrodes. Eight years ago while walking home, the man - whose identity has been withheld -was robbed, beaten, and his skull was crushed. He was left for dead and doctors did not know if he would pull through, but he did, with a severe brain injury.

Since then, the man could not speak or eat - he was fed through a tube - and his arms were useless, until recently. Medical professionals conducted an experiment which ended in February 2006 that involved putting electrodes in his brain, which is also known as deep brain stimulation, something that has been used for a few years now. The electrodes are left on for 12 hours a day and make certain necessary skills, such as speaking, a possibility. Amantadine was then given to the man by doctors which can help improve or hurt the chances of deep stimulation having any positive effects; it is not completely clear what the outcome may be.

Before the deep brain stimulation experiment began, the victim was in a "minimally conscious state", meaning that he occasionally showed signs of awareness. Currently, there are somewhere between 112,000 and 280,000 Americans that are in a minimally conscious state. A man that once was only able to use his thumb or eyes as a way of communicating with others can now speak simple phrases. He no longer has to be fed through a tube since regaining his ability to chew and swallow, but must be spoon fed. Although he doesn't initiate conversation, he will usually respond to others with a one to three word reply. Additionally, his mother says he can drink from a cup, express pain, can laugh and can cry, all things he could do not after sustaining the brain injury.

Although the results are positive and encouraging, experts say the treatment is still in the experimental phase and a larger study is being conducted. Due to the extent of his disability, he still remains in a rehabilitation facility, but continues to improve.
